Being elected ICA Fellow is the highest honor I believe anyone can receive in our discipline. I thought I would just add what was read at the awards ceremony about Mike:

"Dr. Michael Slater has been one of the most prolific scholars in communication. Mike's research has bridged diverse areas including health communication, persuasion, media psychology, and mass communication. Mike is one of the most prolific scholars in the discipline with over 95 publications during the last 15 years. He has published in both the top communication journals and journals outside the discipline including numerous medical and psychology journals. The quality of his scholarship is demonstrated by the awards he has received including ASCoR's Dennis McQuail Top Theory Paper in Communication award and the Lewis Donohew Outstanding Scholar in Health Communication Research award. Mike has been continuously funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism or the National Institute of Drug Abuse since 1995 with over $10 million in funding. Dr. Slater has taken a leading role in developing health communication as a major area of study within the communication discipline. Mike's research has moved beyond the traditional effects framework to the development of dynamic conceptualizations of media use as a mediating process in the development of social identity and risky behavior. Finally, Mike has represented the discipline in various national venues including serving as a member of various national advisory boards, National Institutes of Health study sections, and as a consultant on several CDC projects. Mike was the founding chair of the Coalition for Health Communication. Mike's service to ICA includes servicing as a member of the Nominating Committee (2002-2003) and then chairing that committee (2003-2004). In addition, he chaired the Health Communication Division (2002-2004). To conclude, Dr. Slater exemplifies the scholarship and service that is distinguishes ICA fellows."
