Dr. Slater's research supports teen anti-drug campaign

The federal anti-drug campaign “Above the Influence” appears to have effectively reduced marijuana use by teenagers, new research shows.

A study, led by School of Communication professor Michael Slater, of more than 3,000 students in 20 communities nationwide, found that by the end of 8th grade, 12 percent of those who had not reported having seen the campaign took up marijuana use compared to only 8 percent among students who had reported familiarity with the campaign.

The researchers said they believe this is the first independent study to find evidence for the effectiveness of the “Above the Influence” campaign, which was initially funded at nearly $200 million a year when it began in 2005.

Evidence for the success of “Above the Influence” is especially heartening because the primary independent evaluation of its predecessor campaign, “My Anti-Drug”, showed no evidence for success, Slater said.

“The ‘Above the Influence’ campaign appears to be successful because it taps into the desire by teenagers to be independent and self-sufficient,” Slater said.

For example, one television ad in the campaign ends with the line “Getting messed up is just another way of leaving yourself behind.”

Campaigns that only emphasize the risk of drug use may not be effective with many teens.

“We know that many teenagers are not risk avoidant, and consider the risks of marijuana to be modest. A campaign that merely emphasizes already-familiar risks of marijuana probably won’t reach the teens who are most likely to experiment with drugs,” he said.

Frank Lawrence of Penn State University, Linda Stanley of Colorado State University and Maria Leonora G. Comello of the University of North Carolina co-authored the study, which was supported by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The study appears in the March 2011 issue of the journal Prevention Science.

Dr. Chul-joo Lee's research recognized by Miller-McCune article

We congratulate Professor Chul-joo Lee on having his research featured in an article on Miller-McCune regarding how watching local TV news leads to fatalistic beliefs regarding cancer. The article references a study conducted by Professor Lee and Jeff Niederdeppe that was published in Communication Research this past December entitled: Genre-Specific Cultivation Effects: Lagged Associations Between Overall TV Viewing, Local TV News Viewing, and Fatalistic Beliefs about Cancer Prevention. The results of their study find that watching local television news, but not national news, is positively associated with fatalistic views about cancer. The authors' propose that this may be due to TV-viewing generally cultivating a low sense of control over one's life.

Ohio State's School of Communication #1 in Research Production and #3 Overall in Field

September 28, 2010 - The National Research Council (NRC) has released results of its extensive, five-year study of 83 doctoral programs in the field of communication. The reports reveals The Ohio State University' s School of Communication to be firmly situated among the elite communication programs in the country based on several metrics. The OSU School of Communication faculty achieved an absolute rank of #1 in research activity (e.g., average number of peer-reviewed publications per faculty member). In addition, the School as a whole achieved a #3 ranking in the field based on its achievements along twenty different criteria - these criteria reflected faculty research (e.g., % of faculty with grants), quality of graduate students (e.g., GRE scores), graduate student support (e.g., % of students with full financial support), and a broad range of diversity measures (e.g., % of female faculty, % of female students).

The extensive analyses conducted on the NRC data identified only five programs which could state with 90% certainty that they rank as one of the top 10 programs in the field. Joining OSU's School of Communication on this list are Stanford University's Department of Communication, the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism & Mass Communication, and the Speech Communication program at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign (now the Department of Communication). This is truly elite company and the NRC rankings are a reflection of the significant advancements made by The Ohio State's School of Communication.

It is important to place the NRC rankings in some additional context. The 2010 NRC report is based on data collected only up through the 2005-2006 academic year. OSU's School of Communication has seen its level of research productivity grow exponentially since that time. A quick review of the broad range of works generated of late by the School 's faculty and graduate students and placed in the field's top peer-reviewed journal outlets (see http://www.comm.ohio-state.edu/AboutUs/Publications.aspx?ID=1) offers much hope that the School of Communication is maintaining its steady progress toward becoming the single best place in the country to study communication.

NIAAA grant to OSU Comm Researchers

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Slater and co-investigators Drs. Andrew Hayes, David Ewoldsen, and Russ Fazio for getting The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism grant this past summer. They were awarded a 4-year, $2.28 million grant to study news and advertising effects on alcohol risk perceptions. The study includes use of innovative experimental designs and data collection methods to probe mechanisms underlying news and advertisement effects.

To Our Current and Potential Grantees:

On behalf of the National Cancer Institute, it is with great pleasure that I announce the arrival of the latest installment of public release data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Since 2003, the HINTS survey has served as a cornerstone for statistically reliable information on how Americans aged 18 years and older get health information in a time of extraordinary change. This installment marks the release of the third biennial data point in the HINTS series. The installment brings with it a set of important improvements at the HINTS Web site for our partners.

For Communication Practitioners:
We have made it easier to look at questions across years of administration. You will begin with a simplified catalogue of questions, which will make it easy to track the years in which questions were asked. Once you have selected a question to review, a tabbed viewing screen will let you move quickly between presentations of data for individual years as well as an "All Years" overview of trends and comparisons. As before, you will be able to download charts and graphs for your own use in reports and presentations. An embellished Notes field will give you all the information you need to track the details of each year's administration including wording changes and subtle differences in types of respondents asked. While at the site, don't forget to check the latest collection of "HINTS Briefs," summarizing the results of empirical analyses being published on the data.

For Communication Researchers:
A fully documented data package is available for download in SAS, SPSS, and STATA formats. Please note that the latest administration of the HINTS instrument uses a split telephone + postal sampling frame to evaluate penetration of cell phone only households in the U.S. population. Weights are provided for each frame and composite weights are provided for analysis of the two frames combined. Be sure to read the accompanying documentation for instructions on how to analyze data with these newly embedded sampling features. You will also note that we have made it easy for you browse through an expanded set of resources on the site, and to add them to your own toolkit for easy download.

Also, stay tuned for further announcements on the third biennial HINTS Users Conference to be hosted by NCI in Silver Spring, Maryland on September 24-25 2009. We expect a "call for abstracts" to be issued at the beginning of March, with travel awards offered to students and general researchers for outstanding papers. Plans are to include best papers in a journal supplement to be published in 2010.

Dr. Michael Slater wins int'l award for best article advancing comm theory

Please join me in congratulating Mike Slater for receiving the McQuail Award for best article advancing communication theory published in a peer-reviewed journal!

The McQuail Award is an annual award given by the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and among the largest worldwide. Mike will be traveling to Amsterdam in November to accept the award.

Mike won the award for his "Reinforcing Spirals" article, which

The article was based on papers done during her 1st year core courses in communication theory.

Welcome to new and returning faculty and students!

As we set our schedules for the upcoming quarter, I want to encourage everyone to save some time (and some room for dessert) on Friday, Oct 3, 3:30-4:30, for our first meeting of CHASSIS - Communication, Health, Attitude Structure, and Social Influence Strategies.

We anticipate continuing discussion after this and future meetings at a local waterhole, to keep the conversation lubricated (we'll keep the car puns to a minimum, we promise!).

We believe issues of attitude structure and social influence are the foundation and underpinning of many key issues in communication, whether they be in domains of health, politics, media effects, etc. (in much the same way a chassis is the underpinning of a car, and the same chassis supports a Camry and a Lexus).

We're here to explore those shared underpinnings. In that spirit, we have broadened our original health comm focus to include people from political, social influence, mass and other topical orientations so that we can work together on topics of shared concerns. Second-year PhD student Cat Goodall will do a quick walk-through of a study she'll be presenting at ICA on alcohol ads and implicit attitudes. In the second half of the meeting, Dr. Joyce Wang will discuss a study that examines the dynamic effects of motivational variables on four psychophysiological measures of emotion and cognition, as well as a behavioral measure of channel choice. The study tests the central role of motivational activation in mediated information processing.

Both of these talks are a great segue as we transition to CHASSIS, which has a broader focus that includes attitude structures involved in health and other communication effects. Please join us!

Have you heard? CHASSIS 's the word...

Beginning next academic year, HCRG will officially transition to a new name with a broader focus: CHASSIS, which stands for Communication, Health, Attitude Structure, and Social Influence Strategies.

Per Mike Slater's recent e-mail to group members, the idea behind CHASSIS is that the intellectual challenges in health communication are the same kinds of challenges facing the broader fields of communication and persuasion: developing a better understanding of the role of mediated and interpersonal communication in social influence and social behavior, and a better understanding how it is that messages have the effects they do on attitudes and behaviors. Likewise, progress in those areas (attitude structure, social influence process and strategies) will better inform those of us involved with health communication issues.

Stay tuned for further plans as we roll out the new CHASSIS in the fall. As always, input and ideas are most welcome!

Student members win Comm Day awards!

We're very proud to announce that two of our student members have won coveted awards at the School of Communication's annual Comm Day!

Third-year PhD student Catherine Goodall received the Morgan Award, which is given to a senior PhD student who has demonstrated excellence in research. She has multiple publications, as well as in-press and under-review manuscripts. In addition, she has top conference papers and a book chapter to her credit.

Second-year master's student Gregory Hoplamazian won the graduate student teaching award based on his consistently excellent reviews and for the breadth of his teaching experience while at OSU.

Dr.Waldman will discuss the evolution of humanitarian assistance over the past 30 years, with a strong emphasis on the health and nutrition sectors. He will cover aspects of the complex emergencies in Somalia, Sudan and Mozambique. Lessons learned from events surrounding the genocide in Rwanda will be highlighted. The role of the United Nations, bilateral donors, and non-governmental organizations and their ability to work in the face of extensive human rights abuses will form the basis for discussion.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Geneva, Dr. Waldman began his career as a volunteer in the World Health Organization's Global Smallpox Eradication Program in Bangladesh. He joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1977 and, during his 25 years there, helped develop the epidemiology of refugee health by working in crises in Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Eastern Europe. He also served as a regional epidemiologist, based in West Africa, for the Combatting Communicable Diseases of Childhood Program, as Secretary of WHO's Task Force on Cholera Control, and as Technical Director of the global child survival project, BASICS.

He is the founder of the Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University where he is Professor of Clinical Population and Public Health. Dr. Waldman serves on the Board of Overseers of the International Rescue Committee, the Board of Directors of Physicians for Human Rights, and has published extensively on complex emergencies and on child health in developing countries.

School of Communication alum Emily Burkhart and faculty members Tony Roberto and Janice Raup-Krieger will be presenting on their experiences working on health issues abroad.

Emily will talk about her trip this past summer to Uganda, where she visited many sites (from public/private hospitals, clinics, and NGO offices), interviewed health professionals, and gained insight on a variety of issues. Janice and Tony will be presenting on the initial stages of a research project they are conducting in Bangladesh in collaboration with the International Breast Cancer Foundation (IBCRF). The project will develop a culturally appropriate intervention to increase awareness among Bangladeshi women and their families of free, walk-in breast problem clinics that have been developed by the IBCRF and Amader Gram (a non-profit organization focused on social issues in rural Bangladesh).

NIH Submission Process Workshop & Panel Discussion

Staff from NIH will provide detailed information on the Pathway Independence Awards and a brief description of the new Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration (EUREKA) program. Congratulations to Tony Roberto (with Cat Goodall as a co-author) and Janice Krieger for snagging two of the top 3 faculty papers in Health Communication at NCA 2007!

That’s at least three years in a row where an OSU health communication faculty has had a Top Three Paper at a ICA or NCA conference (I had one at ICA with Nori Comello in 2007, Prabu David had one at ICA in 2006, Don Cegala had one at NCA in 2005, and Tony Roberto had one at both NCA and ICA in 2005). Catherine Goodall wins 2007 Outstanding Researcher Award!

Catherine Goodall was recipient of the Emery Award for Outstanding Researcher at the School of Communication's 2007 Comm Day ceremony (which comes with a very nice plaque and $1,000). This award goes to a M.A. or Ph.D. student with the best research record in the School that is not entering their final year of the program. There were several excellent candidates for this award, but Catherine ultimately won because even though she is only in her second year of graduate school, she already has three publications (including a first authored publication in Health Communication -- a highly regarded top-tier journal), and two top paper awards (including a top student-lead paper in the Health Communication division of ICA). Please join me in congratulating Catherine for winning this prestigious award, and her excellent work over the past two years.

ATTENTION ALL SOCIAL SCIENTISTS AND PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCHERS:
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR ORIGINAL DATA COLLECTION VIA TESS!

The National Science Foundation, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security, is funding opportunities for original data collection for research that has potential relevance to the concerns of DHS. Three broad substantive areas have been identified as relevant and likely avenues for research:

Risk communication and its effects on disaster preparedness
Government and individual attributions of responsibility and perceived responsiveness; and
Inter-group threat and cooperation

Other areas of research with relevance to terrorism, disaster preparedness, or related public health and medical issues will also be considered.

Data collection for these projects will be paid for and conducted with the assistance of Time-sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS). As with other TESS applications, only a short, 5 page proposal is required.

TESS offers researchers opportunities to test their experimental ideas on large, diverse, randomly selected subject populations, or on specific subsamples of the population (based on geographic location, demographics, or other criteria). For more information on this special call or on TESS opportunities more generally, and for examples of TESS studies completed in the past, please visit our home page at www.ExperimentCentral.org.

PLEASE NOTE: For those with other areas of interest, TESS continues to fund data collection for survey-experimental work in all areas of the social sciences, and for graduate student and faculty investigators in all disciplines. These proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, and we will continue accepting new proposals as our funding allows.

Our next HCRG meeting will be Monday, April 16 from 12 to 1 p.m. in 3116 Derby Hall. The first half-hour will be open discussion, and Dr. Robert Agunga will present from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Below is a description of his presentation.

Dr. Robert Agunga, Associate Professor in Agricultural Communication with a courtesy associate professor appointment in the School of Communication, a member of the Health Communication Group, and a 2007/8 Fulbright Scholar will present his research on "Communication and poverty reduction in Africa."

As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Agunga will spend a year at the University of Malawi, Bunda College of Agriculture, in southern Africa where he will assist in developing a graduate curriculum in development communication and conduct field research on communication for poverty reduction toward a book on Communication for development in Africa that will focus on the role of communication in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Janice, Tony, Mira receive Population and Health Seed Grant Won!

Congratulations are in order.
Anthony Roberto, Janice Raup Krieger, and Mira Katz (Public Health) have been awarded $59,510 through the Population and Health Targeted Investment in Excellence initiative with funds provided by the Provost's Office for their proposal, Development of a Community-based Intervention to Improve Acceptance of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine in Appalachia.
This is a really exciting opportunity to develop a major funded line of research on this timely topic with a population with unduly high cervical cancer rates.
And I can say (as a member of the review team--recused of course from review of their proposal) that this seed money competition involved many senior scholars and sophisticated proposals from around campus; this award meant that a diverse review group including representation from economics, psychology, and public health all found the proposal exciting and well-conceived.

Mike Slater and Nori Commello Receive Top Paper Award at ICA

Congratulations to Mike Slater (SBS Distinguished Professor) and Nori Commello (Ph.D. student) for their Top Three Paper in the Health Communication Division at ICA this year. Their paper is entitled “Issue Concern and Risk Judgments as Mediators of News Influence on Support for Alcohol Control Policies.”

Note: That’s at least three years in a row where an OSU health communication faculty has had a Top Three Paper at a national or international conference (Prabu David had one at ICA in 2006, Don Cegala had one at NCA in 2005, and I had one at both NCA and ICA in 2005). We’ve also had a nice streak of Top Student Papers in Health Com (Kellie Carlyle got a Top Student Paper at ICA in 2005, and Catherine Goodall received the Top Student-lead paper at ICA in 2006 – coauthored with Dr. Osei Appiah). Great work everyone! And thanks to Mike and Nori for continuing this impressive streak!

Putting Your (Health Comm) Money Where Your Mouth Is: Bangladesh's One Taka Coin

Greetings everyone, At today’s HCRG meeting I passed out one taka coins (the taka is the monetary unit in Bangladesh). I think these coins represent an excellent example of how a country is (literally) putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to a health communication campaign (overpopulation and hunger are still very real problems in Bangladesh -- and the visual and written message on the one taka coin is aimed at preventing both of these problems).

If you didn’t get a coin today, I have lots left (so feel free to stop by my office to get a couple). I’ve also included an image of the coin with this post in case you want to use it as an example in class, etc.. She had several other exciting opportunities, but ASU looks like a great fit for her work on mediated and interpersonal communication approaches to preventing and addressing intimate partner violence.

Recent grad publishes book based on her dissertation

An OSU School of Communication graduate has a forthcoming book from Cambria Press that is based on her dissertation. Juliann Cortese (Ph.D., 2005) was an advisee of Chip Eveland and her book, "Internet Learning and the Building of Knowledge," looks at how design elements such as pop-up windows and hyperlinks influence knowledge structure density as well as definitional and factual knowledge. The book is a great example of one of our former students' successes, but is also relevant to any HCRG members working on new technology, learning, and health information seeking.

Columbus Public Health needs your opinions about HIV Prevention

The Columbus Regional Advisory Group, comprised of various AIDS Service Organizations (e.g. Columbus AIDS Task Force, Tobias Project, Southeast, Columbus Public Health) is looking for people to take their needs assessment survey regarding HIV Prevention in the Columbus area.

This survey shall help AIDS Service Organizations provide better HIV prevention and education to the Columbus and surrounding Franklin County communities!

Please take time to take the survey! The goal of this survey is to obtain feedback from locales from which we might not have received feedback in the years past. We want to know who we are successfully reached, have not reached and need to reach!

Be heard and tell us about what works and what doesn't work with HIV prevention!

Please snowball this out to your colleagues and so on and so forth. AIDS is a serious issue, but we have the power to stop it. 2,653 are currently living with HIV/AIDS in Franklin County alone. In 2004, there were 299 new infections alone in Franklin County. Yes 299 in Franklin County may not seem like that many. But think about how many lives are affected - family, friends, peers, mentors.

Kellie Carlyle will also be discussing an upcoming experiment (for her dissertation) that measures the effect of emotion on attribution of blame in response to news articles on relationship violence and abuse. Where to start

I've got a general question about where I can find some good literature on fear appeals and risk communication. I'm interested in reading up on fear appeals, risk perception, crisis communication...those types of topics. I'm new to the health comm field and I'm interested in taking some of those health comm ideas and applying them to the political comm field. Are there any good starting points for me...books or journal articles that are worth note? I can't be at the HCRG meeting on Monday, so I thought I'd ask on the blog, maybe it can help other students too. Thanks in advance!

NCA Pre-Conference

I went last time and found it very helpful, even as someone early in the Ph.D. program. Health communication scholars and practitioners have long recognized the tremendous opportunities and challenges of working within and across this discipline. This pre-conference is designed to enhance the work and network of (a) doctoral students in the final stages of completing Ph.D. work (i.e., finishing classes, working on the prospectus, conducting and writing up the dissertation project) or (b) recent Ph.D.s working to establish their research agenda. (Of course, scholars at any stage in the development of their research agenda are welcome to attend.)
